The Landing
String Orchestra.
2009
Initially, I had received permission to set C. S. Lewis's poem "The Landing" for the resident quartet at the 1996 Oregon Bach Festival Composers Symposium. The piece was well-received, so I sought permission to publish the work: however, the rights had changed hands and the new owners would not entertain the idea of granting permission. As a result, I withdrew the piece.
Several years later I decided to revise it as a setting for string orchestra. In the same week that I completed the score, I showed it to Crafton Beck, the conductor of the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra. He immediately decided to include it in the following year's MSO concert season. The BU String Orchestra premiered it beforehand, under the direction of Song Xie. The following May, students and I took it on a musical trip to Tokyo.
