String Quartet #1

(In three movements)

3:53

3:27

2:31

This work has no particular program other than a dialogue of contrasting characters and the desire to show Harold Owen that I could write fast music.

String Quartet #2

(...also in three movements)

9:30

8:38

7:49

This work follows three distinct ideas.  The first movement explores a sincere but somewhat droll theme in various guises.  The second involves a slow, tense dismay which returns at the end as a song of peaceful, wistful longing.  The final movement presents a set of variations on an irregular tune, framed by emphatic opening chords and a bewildered coda.   I originally planned four movements, but the third movement remained uncooperative and eventually excused itself.
